January 2018 Movie Roundup

Not every movie gets a full review, so below is a list of other stuff I watched the past month.

Aftermath (2017)

92 mins | Thriller, Drama

A fairly standard and very slow character study from two sides of the coin in the aftermath of a fatal plane crash. Fun to see Arnold Schwarzenegger in something other than a action role. Apart from that not really memorable.

Score: 5/10

American Made (2017)

115 mins | Crime, Action, Comedy, History

Don’t know why, but somehow this movie just couldn’t get me interested. For those “Based On A True Story”-enthusiast a must see I guess.

Score: 5/10

Blame! (2017)

106 mins | Drama, Science Fiction, Horror, Action, Anime

Interesting story which reminded me a bit of The Matrix. But my main issue with Blame!, and some of the other stuff Polygon Pictures has put out lately like Ajin and Knights Of Sidonia, is its look. Don’t get me wrong, the art style is stunning with gorgeous designs and backdrops. But I just can’t get used to the horrid low frame rate CGI for the characters. Especially when some other CGI stuff, like smoke clouds are presented butter smoothly. It just puts me off.

Score: 6/10

Dirty Grandpa (2016)

102 mins | Comedy

If you set your mind to silly mode before the movie starts you’ll love it, so that was what I did. And, seeing Aubrey acting as another awkward girl is enough to score some points with me.

Score: 7/10

Flatliners (2017)

110 mins | Science Fiction, Drama

As with the original a very interesting concept. Shamefully this remake is a mess with a horrible script and acting and pointless jumpscares.

Score: 4/10

Geostorm (2017)

109 mins | Action, Thriller, Science Fiction

Somewhat fun disaster movie that falls short because of some dodgy CGI and ridiculous science. Just drink some booze before you start watching this one and you’ll have a fun time.

Score: 5/10

Gerald’s Game (2017)

103 mins | Thriller, Drama, Horror

Didn’t expected much from this one as Stephen King adaptations are hit and miss mostly, but was pleasantly surprised. Really fucks with your mind in a dark creepy way.

Score: 8/10

Hail, Caesar! (2016)

106 mins | Comedy, Drama, Mystery

Visually stunning movie from the Coen Brothers which despite its fun and quirky characters doesn’t impress. In part because the story just doesn’t go anywhere.

Score: 6/10

Indestructible Man (1956)

72 mins | Crime, Horror, Science Fiction

Hilarious movie that was a joy to watch thanks to the Mystery Science Theater 3000 crew. If it weren’t for them I would have been left with one big pile of culty mess.

Score: 4/10

The Little Hours (2017)

89 mins | Comedy

The cast really made this movie. Just watch it if you like them, as apart from them nothing really goes on in this movie.

Score: 6/10

Proof Of Life (2000)

135 mins | Action, Adventure, Drama, Thriller, Romance

Fun action thriller with not enough tension to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Score: 6/10

Psyho-Pass: The Movie (2015)

113 mins | Action, Science Fiction, Anime

I didn’t see the series so I can’t comment on how it relates to it. But on its own it stood its ground. Action packed and great animation.

Score: 7/10

The Room (2003)

99 mins | Drama, Romance

Thank god it only lasted 99 minutes, cause this movie was tearing me apart. It really is one of the worst movies ever. So bad it gets funny, but still.

Score: 2/10

Run Silent, Run Deep (1958)

93 mins | War, Drama

One of the better submarine based war movies with some excellent special effects for its time. Also great acting by Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster.

Score: 7/10

Saving Private Ryan (1998)

169 mins | Drama, History, War

This one doesn’t really need an introduction. One of the best war movies ever made. The beach landing in the beginning is one of the most impressive shot scenes ever.

Score: 9/10

Thor: Ragnarok (2017)

130 mins | Action, Adventure, Superhero, Comedy, Science Fiction

The first few minutes took me some effort to get into the mindset of the movie, after that a blast of a movie. Guess the best sofar in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Score: 9/10
