Discovering: Raven

I listen to a shit ton of music every month. As a distraction from rowdy co-workers and all the noise at my workplace, or in the background when chilling in the evening with a good glass of beer or whiskey. And as variety is the spice of life, each month I’ll try to check out a new band recommended to me by and see if I like them or not based on their first record. This month’s recommendation:

Record: Rock Until You Drop
Year:  1981
Genre: Speed Metal
Recommended because off: Anvil, Saxon and Riot

It has been quite a while since I last did one of these, but as my vacation has started it’s the perfect time the dive straight into some (for me) new tunes. So the first pick are the British rockers from Raven. Formed in Newcastle in 1974 they released their first proper record in 1981. And as 1981 was a very good year, I was born, *wink*, it must contain some killer tunes.

Rock Until You Drop is certainly a fitting title. During the roughly 50-minutes they jam up a tight record. Playing some very early speed metal and NWOBHM, they’ve kept some cheesiness from the 70s glam rock in their sound. And it’s the good cheesiness, like a cheddar I guess. Because this record kept me focused. Normally I press skip as soon as I hear a sniff of glam. The style just isn’t for me.

But this trio, damn, they rock. It’s a shame, that as far as I learned from reading up on them, they were left behind after some band called Iron Maiden rose up in the charts and really pushed the NWOBHM sound forward. To me, John and Mark Gallagher and Rob “Wacko” Hunter are playing equally as good as their counterparts from the aforementioned band on this record. Heck, I even prefer John’s singing above Paul Di’Anno.

What more can I say, 1981 was a good year, a very good year indeed.

Score: 8/10

Geek, Weeb, Metalhead, Tuba Player & Couchpotato. That pretty much sums me up. Although some people also call me 'Party', 'Gargamel' and 'The Listmaster'. Anyhow, that's me, 40 years old and crazy enough to write about all kinds of crap. My music taste you ask? That's simple: True Skaro Wookie-Fronted Klingon Metal. As long as it's loud. Rock and geek on!
